Sharing the Vision - Part Two
Closing Speech
1998 Finance One National Sales Conference
San Diego, CA
January 15, 1998

Donald A. Winkler,
Chairman and CEO, Finance One Corporation,
a subsidiary of BANC ONE CORPORATION

Thank you, Mike. Now that is the kind of inspiration and creativity that drives success — whether you are overcoming personal hardship or solving a customer's problem. It also shows the great things you can accomplish when you believe in yourself.

With a strong belief system, the challenge is not how to do the impossible. The challenge is making a commitment to do it every day. Because unlike riding a bike, belief in yourself is not something you learn once and have for the rest of your life. It takes dedication. It takes discipline. It takes reinforcement. And it takes a commitment to practice, each and every day.

A friend of mine recently visited the Smithsonian Institute in Washington. They had an incredible exhibit of Stradivarius violins — probably the most beautiful instruments ever created. An authentic Stradivarius — and there are only a few left — was made about 250 years ago in a little village in Italy. It is considered priceless — not only because it is rare, but because the design gives it wonderful acoustics. Played by a skilled performer, its music is inspiring. And yet, if a Stradivarius is not played every day, it goes out of tune. Its tremendous power is lost.

The same thing applies to what you have learned this week. Practice, and your playing will improve every day. Get to know each chord, and you will bring out even greater harmonies. Make it part of everything you do, and you will play beautiful music for the rest of your life.

There is something else about the Stradivarius we should remember. Its music is most beautiful when it is shared.

Every morning this week, you have seen an orchestra working together to perform the 1812 overture. While each instrument delivers a unique sound, together, they produce a symphony that truly inspires. As the piece moves to crescendo, there is a moment when the vision is shared — not just by the violins, but by the entire string section ... by the wind and percussion instruments ... by the conductor ... and by the audience. At once, they are connected by the music.

That is the power of sharing the vision!

In the same way, our vision is most powerful when it is shared. By working together with each other, across businesses and with customers, Finance One will make beautiful music in 1998.

Throughout the week, we saw how sharing the vision can help us gain a common focus and work more effectively as a team. We saw how sharing will help us work across businesses and leverage the greater resources of BANC ONE. And we saw how teaming with key customers can help us take these relationships to the next level. Like the musicians of a fine orchestra, you have the skills, knowledge, desire, and the belief in yourself, to make sharing the vision a reality.

As you get ready to leave San Diego, to return to your families, your jobs, and your customers, I want you to think about what you have experienced this week. About what you have learned, and how it has inspired you. I also want you to think about the opportunities ahead. About what you hope for, and what you aspire to be. I want you to wish upon a star ... and to think about the power of dreams. Dreams open the door to our imaginations. They lead us to infinite possibilities ... to the true potential hidden within us.

What you dream of achieving defines who you are. It is more important than what you did yesterday, or even today — because dreams describe our passion for the accomplishments ahead.

The vision we talked about sharing this week is the result of many dreams coming together. It is a common link for all of our hopes, our strengths and our aspirations. Vision brings clarity to the dreams we strive for. It gives our dreams definition, and focuses us in the same direction. Yet vision alone is not enough to realize the power of dreams.

Only commitment ensures that we act on our vision — that we have the will and strength to make our dreams a reality.

On this day, 69 years ago, a man was born who made a profound commitment to sharing the vision. He was a leader, a dreamer. And because of the tremendous commitment he made, he triumphed over adversity time and time again to make the world a better place. At the age of 26, he organized a boycott of the Montgomery, Alabama, transit company to allow people of every race to ride the bus together. At 34, he led a quarter of million people to a peaceful march in Washington, and brought historic change through the civil rights and voting acts. A year later, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Martin Luther King, Jr. had a dream of a better life for all people. He also knew that his commitment to sharing that dream — was the only way to make it come true.

Commitment gives us the strength to carry through on our dreams. It turns vision into action. People who have made a commitment cannot be kept from success. Put stumbling blocks in their way ... and they make stepping stones. Try to steer them off course ... they move ahead even faster. If they can't go over it ... they will go through it.

Like Martin Luther King, Jr., people who have pledged their personal commitment pursue their dreams with great depth and intensity. They have no room for apathy or indifference. Their commitment provides a constant source of renewal and energy ... a reminder of what they are striving for. In the end, the power of their dreams is realized.

When the Finance One story began in 1993, we had a few dreams of our own. We only had one division, and receivables were just $300 million. I remember it well. To help us get there the Consumer Division captured those dreams in the form of vision drawings, creating a clear picture of what they wanted to become. And with a lot of hard work, our dream became a reality.

A year later, we added the leasing company, and we grew at a breakthrough pace. As we built our vision for long-term success, Finance One doubled in size. By adding the leasing company, pre-tax earnings jumped from $31 million in 1994 to $64 million in 1995. The Commercial Division drew a fairy tale future as well. And what do you know: It came true too!

But the picture was not complete until we added the Indirect Division in 1996. Then last year, we brought a new guy on board, with some dreams of his own. The drawings that Indirect made completed the Finance One picture.

Together, our dreams really came true in 1997. With an incredible 34 percent growth and more than $366 million in pre-tax earnings!

What do you do when all your dreams come true? You create new dreams!

With our commitment to sharing the vision, Finance One will reach earnings of $472 million in 1998. An astonishing 32 percent growth! How will we make that dream a reality?

We have talked a lot this week about what we are striving for at Finance One, and how we will get there. Together, we have made a promise to achieve even greater success in 1998 ... and we have put our commitments in writing. Today, I want to pledge my personal commitment to realizing our dreams, by sharing the vision in 1998.

I would like to invite to the stage John McCoy, Rich Lehmann, and representing the BANC ONE management committee, Ken Stevens. John, this is my commitment to share our vision ... to carry the message to our colleagues, to other members of the BANC ONE family, and to our customers. I am committed to sharing the vision and together we will succeed in '98.

(John McCoy takes envelope and hands chip to Winkler.)

I will carry this symbol as a reminder of my word, and as a pledge that my chips are in the game. Now that is a start. But it is just me. I can't share the vision alone. So, I would like to ask my management team to come up here and answer the same question.

Rick, John, Steve, Don, and Barrett — are you committed to share the vision in 1998? To work together with colleagues, across businesses, and with customers?

(Group responds, "I am committed to sharing the vision, and together we will succeed in '98.")

Well, we are getting there. But we still need more support to reach the top in 1998. We have talked this week about the power of working across businesses. About leveraging the greater resources of BANC ONE.

Ladies and gentlemen, the corporate management committee of BANC ONE is here on video to pledge their commitment to sharing the vision across businesses. These are the leaders of BANC ONE. They can help us break down barriers and work together. They can help us inspire action and give us support to realize our dreams.

Ken, are you committed to sharing the vision

(Ken Stevens: "I am committed to sharing the vision, and together we will succeed in '98.")

Okay, now we are really getting somewhere.

But it is clear we are going to need the entire team to make a commitment to sharing the vision in 1998. So, how about it? Are you committed to sharing the vision? Let us really hear it! Would all the team leaders come forward to make your pledge!

(Team leaders make commitments.)

Truly amazing, isn't it? Look at what happens when we put all of our commitments toward a common purpose.

Well, what do you think John and Rich?

(John and Rich take commitments out of their pockets. John McCoy: Don, we are committed to sharing the vision too.)

Thank you, gentlemen! We did it!

I want to thank you, ladies and gentlemen, for your tremendous efforts this week — for your contributions over the past year and for your commitments to an even greater 1998.

Remember: With a commitment to sharing the vision, we will realize the power of the dream in 1998 and beyond!

Thank you and have a safe trip home.
