Donald Winkler Tells How He Copes With Learning Disabilities
An article that appeared in
The Forman Letter
June, 1991

by Mary Ann Martin

Use technology, mirrors, time management and all of your senses to develop your talents and skills while overcoming learning problems, top banker Donald A. Winkler told Forman students.

Mr. Winkler is Vice-President of Citicorp/Citibank and parent of two Forman graduates, Jennifer '90 and George '89. He is in charge of global informational needs for the bank and controls movement of up to $30 billion around the world on a typical working day. He addressed the students May 30 in the third program sponsored by the Leadership Forum. The forum brings outstanding role models to the student body.

A man who described himself as having trouble with numbers and words ("I would spell red d-e-r"), Mr. Winkler also said he has what is known as "no mind's eye." He could not close his eyes and readily picture things that had happened, he said, with limited exceptions: "I remember the birth of my children and my marriage." He makes a point of doing things that will cultivate use of his senses. One time he visited White Flower Farm to drink in the beauty of "two and a half million daffodils." Now he can close his eyes and "see the field" in bloom. "Don't be afraid" of your limitations, he said. "The senses are there; find ways to use them." Knowing yourself and finding out what motivates you is important, he said. Mr. Winkler recalled he was overweight and was passed over for promotion at the bank. The desire to advance led to a change in personal habits to bring his weight under control.

To overcome being uncomfortable speaking to people, Mr. Winkler practices before a mirror until he is sure he can deliver the speech before an audience. He also works on eye contact with individuals he is addressing, saying that helps build confidence. And if he makes a mistake, the banker said he no longer gets flustered. "You have to have a sense of humor." Effective time management is essential to success, Mr. Winkler said. He prepares a week in advance for meetings and makes sure he sets aside time for his family and fun.

Mr. Winkler makes use of a full range of technology. He uses a tape recorder regularly to record thoughts. Often, he said, he has good ideas early in the morning and "I capture them on tape so I don't lose them." An electronic thesaurus, a cellular telephone, a pager and a pocket-sized computer are among tools he uses regularly.

Improvement of his reading speed came as he mastered techniques designed to help him read. Now, Mr. Winkler said, he reads well and comprehends the material quickly.

Mr. Winkler holds a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Northrop University and attended the Wharton Business School Executive MBA program.
