Winkler
gives commencement speech at Shelton School
Dallas, Texas
May 20, 2000
Twenty-two
students from Shelton School began a new era in their life
Sunday, May 20. On hand to celebrate was Ford Credit Chairman
and CEO Don Winkler. "You have turned your differences into
distinctions," he said.
Founded
in 1976 by Dr. June Shelton, the Shelton School is a private,
non-profit, nonsectarian, co-ed school serving intelligent
children with learning differences and has been the turning
point for thousands of students. Shelton provides positive,
practical solutions to the problems of learning-different
students. Its goal is to return its students to mainstream
classrooms. For some, Shelton's full-school program is optimal
for the duration of their undergraduate days.
Winkler
talked to the students about his own experience with learning
differences. Through hard work, determination and the love
and support of friends and family, Winkler learned to make
his learning differences work for him. Winkler told them to
remember parents and family whose love supported them as they
struggled at school; teachers who gave them courage when they
were filled with doubt; and friends who were there for them
like brothers and sisters.
One
out of every five people has a learning problem and having
a support system can help people with learning difference
feel safe. Winkler spoke of that fear and told the graduates
that when he thought he was alone, it was his family and friends
who offered him love and support during the rough times.
"Embrace
the challenges along the way; do not be discouraged by any
setback; and above all--do not be afraid!" "I…we… believe
in you always," he said.
