Breakthrough
language is a set of key phrases to be used everyday to get
people to change the way they think and act. Don Winkler created
these to encourage people to think of future possibilities,
not dwell on the limitations of the past. These breakthrough
language tools encourage the successful hunt for creative
ideas. They are great for brainstorming sessions and for encouraging
open-minded talks everywhere. You could even put these on
your meeting room walls just as we've done!
- CVS
> BVS
When you don't like what you see, change
the Current View of the Situation to a Better
View of the Situation.
Example:
CVS:
Our
plane from San Antonio to Mexico is delayed eight hours;
the first day of our vacation is trashed!
BVS:
Let's enjoy this beautiful day in this wonderful
city, see the Alamo, have a nice lunch, and get our vacation
off to a relaxing start!
- But
> And
Avoid limited thinking. Replace the word:
but with the word: and
everywhere.
Example:
BUT:
Joe
is a hard worker, but
he doesn't have the skills we need in the next decade.
AND:
Joe
is a hard worker, and
with the right training, he will be a major contributor
to our future success.
- Up
'Til Now
When someone says it can't be done, reply
with: "Up 'til now,
we haven't done it that way."
- People
Don't Fail, Events Fail
Remember, failure is a stepping stone to
success. It took Thomas Edison over 6,000 tries to find
a good filament material and make a working lightbulb.
